Q: Is free therapy real in California?
A: Five routes may provide care without a session charge: (1) Medi-Cal covered behavioral-health services (the two-door guide →); (2) an employer EAP, if your benefit includes counseling (decoder →); (3) county behavioral-health services, based on eligibility and need; (4) Vet Center counseling for eligible veterans, service members and families; (5) campus counseling, under that school's eligibility and visit rules.
Worked example: your benefits portal says the EAP includes short-term counseling. Before choosing a therapist, ask how many visits are included, who in the household qualifies, and what happens if you need continued care.
One thing changed on 1 July 2026: county behavioral health now runs under new spending rules, funds substance use treatment for the first time, and does not require Medi-Cal enrolment. What that means when you call →
Do this: if you have any job, check the EAP first — it's the fastest $0 route. Ten minutes in your benefits portal.
Sources: DHCS behavioral-health services and VA Vet Centers. EAP and campus terms vary; verify them with the program itself.
If a crime is why you need it, the Victim Compensation Board pays for counselling directly, before any other free route. Who pays for therapy after a crime →
