If you have Medi-Cal in Riverside County, odds are your card says IEHP (Inland Empire Health Plan) — or Molina. Here's the insider fact: IEHP runs its own behavioral health department with direct intake, so for everyday therapy needs you can skip the general queue and call your plan's behavioral health line straight away. Medi-Cal managed care has no copay for covered care. Share of Cost is different: if your eligibility notice lists it, ask what you must pay or owe before Medi-Cal pays.⁴

Door 1: IEHP (or Molina) — anxiety, depression, stress, grief

Call the behavioral health number on your card and say:

"I'm requesting outpatient therapy. Please give me therapists taking new patients, and an appointment within 10 business days per the timely access standard."

The 10-business-day rule applies to Medi-Cal managed care.¹ Deadline missed → say "grievance" → then DMHC Help Center 1-888-466-2219.

Door 2: The CARES Line — (800) 706-7500 — heavier needs, or not sure

Riverside University Health System's CARES Line (Community Access, Referral, Evaluation and Support) is the county's front door to specialty mental health.² No referral needed. Say:

"I have Medi-Cal. I'd like a screening and a referral to ongoing therapy."

They screen you and refer you to a county clinic or contracted provider. Under the No Wrong Door policy, if your needs fit the other door, they must connect you — not bounce you.³

What happens next: screening (15–20 min) → referral to a clinic with a name and number → the clinic schedules intake. Riverside's geography is the trap: ask for the soonest intake anywhere you can drive or take telehealth, not just the nearest clinic. Telehealth counts as a covered visit, and in the desert communities it's often weeks faster.
