"Health Net" is three different tickets depending on how you got the card, and people burn weeks using the wrong door. Thirty seconds to sort yours:

  • Through work or bought directly (including Covered California): commercial plan — Door A below.
  • Through Medi-Cal (no premium, or you qualified by income): Medi-Cal managed care — Door B.
  • Not sure? Call the member number on the card and ask: "Is this a commercial plan or a Medi-Cal plan?"

Door A: Commercial Health Net

Behavioral health here is administered by Health Net itself — the plan moved these services off MHN from January 2024, and MHN now appears only as a legacy claims address for Medi-Cal service dates before September 2024.³ The member-facing name is "Health Net Behavioral Health," and the number that matters is the one on your card; Health Net also publishes (888) 426-0030.³ Say:

"I'm requesting outpatient therapy. Please give me at least five in-network therapists taking new patients, and note today's date — the timely access standard is 10 business days."

The full timely-access machinery applies: 10 business days, follow-ups included, urgent care in 48–96 hours, and mandatory out-of-network coverage at in-network cost when the network can't deliver.¹ Log every contact. If the list turns out to be ghosts, use the log: "The network failed timely access; I'm requesting out-of-network authorization per Health & Safety Code §1367.03." Escalation: "grievance," then DMHC Help Center 1-888-466-2219.

Door B: Health Net Medi-Cal

Same phone number, different magic words — and $0 cost:

"I'm a Medi-Cal member requesting outpatient therapy, and an appointment within 10 business days per the timely access standard."

The Health Net-specific tip

Health Net's footprint is heaviest where networks run thinnest — the Central Valley and Inland Empire. Two levers matter more there: telehealth counts (any California-licensed therapist, statewide, one rule →), and the out-of-network duty bites hardest exactly where the in-network list is short. Thin networks make the law stronger, not weaker.
