There is no official census of private therapy fees in Los Angeles. TherapyCalifornia does not have enough verified listings to publish one yet. A range copied from directory profiles would look precise and tell you very little.
This page does something sturdier: it gives you the document that binds the provider, the clock that binds many health plans, and the Los Angeles County door that answers without asking for a credit card.
If you will pay cash, ask for the price in writing
Say: “I will not use insurance. Please send me a good faith estimate for weekly therapy, including every charge I should expect.”
Federal rules generally require a provider to give an uninsured or self-pay person a good faith estimate when care is scheduled at least three business days ahead or when the person asks for one. Keep it. If one provider later bills at least $400 above that provider's estimate, a federal dispute process may apply.¹
Ask four plain questions before the first appointment:
- What is the full fee for one session?
- Is the first appointment priced differently?
- Is there a late-cancellation fee?
- If we meet weekly for three months, what total should I expect?
If you have insurance, start the clock
For many California-regulated plans, a non-urgent appointment with a non-physician mental health provider must be available within 10 business days, unless a clinician decides a longer wait will not harm you.² Ask your plan to locate an available in-network clinician. Write down the date, time, representative's name, and reference number.

The Los Angeles County door
Los Angeles County's Department of Mental Health runs a 24/7 Help Line at (800) 854-7771 for mental health and substance-use support, referrals, and crisis assessment.³ It is a public access point, not a private therapist directory. Ask what services you may qualify for and what happens next before giving personal details.
