The short answer: Four to six visits is the published average. If you already know you need longer-term treatment, ask for case management during the screening rather than treating the average as a promise.¹

Start with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Book it: Call CAPS for an initial screening; crisis calls and walk-ins are available during business hours. The current phone number is 657-278-3040. Open the official service page →¹

Who can use it: Currently enrolled full- and part-time students. Open University students qualify if they paid the Student Health Fee "or if they have bought a Titan Health card"; summer needs enrolment plus the summer fee; withdrawn and graduated students are "Not eligible."¹ What it costs: The student health fee covers CAPS with no additional service fee.¹

The limit that matters

Brief individual care averages four to six sessions; the site states an average, not a fixed cap. Groups have no session limit. This is the fact to confirm again at intake, because staffing and campus rules can change during the academic year.¹

If you need help today

Call 657-278-3040 and ask for the on-call clinician, or walk in to Titan Hall's 1st floor — crisis service is available "for both phone calls and walk-in crisis services between the hours of 8AM-4:30PM, Monday-Friday."² After hours: "our crisis line continues to be available to current students every day, 24/7, including weekends and holidays."²

In crisis? Call or text 988 — free, 24/7.

Medication and longer-term therapy

Psychiatry: CAPS offers psychiatry when a counselor determines that an evaluation is warranted. When campus care is too short: "CAPS staff will work with students to find providers to help meet their needs. Sometimes this involves a referral to Case Management, discusing how to access resources through health insurance plans, or gathering referrals to community mental health providers."¹ Ask early — CSUF's own off-campus resources page is currently broken, so the referral has to come from staff rather than a list you can read.¹

If you use a parent’s insurance, billing paperwork can disclose that care was used. Read the student privacy and EOB route →. If money is the obstacle, compare Medi-Cal →, sliding-scale care →, and California-wide telehealth →.

What you need Start here What to say or ask
Help today Call 657-278-3040 and ask for the on-call clinician, or visit Titan Hall during crisis walk-in hours. “I need urgent support today.” If you may be in immediate danger, call 911.
A first counseling visit Call CAPS for an initial screening; crisis calls and walk-ins are available during business hours. Ask whether intake counts toward the session allowance and when the first clinical visit can happen.
Evening or weekend support The CAPS number connects current students with a clinician 24/7, including weekends and holidays. Ask whether this is crisis-only, one-time support or a route that can schedule recurring care.
Medication CAPS offers psychiatry when a counselor determines that an evaluation is warranted. Ask whether a referral is required, what a visit costs and who handles refills between terms.
Weekly, specialized or longer-term therapy CAPS staff work with students to find providers, sometimes via Case Management or the student's insurance. Say what matters: specialty, identity, location, telehealth, language, insurance and maximum price.

Before you spend money outside campus

Campus counseling and outside insurance are separate. Before booking an outside therapist, ask:

  1. Is this clinician in-network for my exact plan—not just the insurance company?
  2. What will I owe before and after my deductible?
  3. Does the plan require a campus referral or prior authorization?
  4. If the clinician is out-of-network, will they provide a superbill and where do I submit it?

If you use a parent’s plan, ask the insurer how to request confidential communications before the first claim. An explanation of benefits can otherwise show that care was used.

What to ask in the first appointment

  1. What is my individual-session limit this term or year, and does intake count?
  2. If I need weekly or specialized care, who starts the outside referral?
  3. Is psychiatry separate, and does it require a campus or insurance referral?
  4. What can I use while I am waiting: a group, same-day consultation, or virtual care?
  5. Will any charge or insurance explanation be sent to someone else?

Verification record

Every campus-specific statement above was read on an official Cal State Fullerton page. Core access facts are due for re-check by 2026-11-22. A missing number is reported as “not published,” never filled from an old catalog or another campus.

CSUF's CAPS Services page twice points students to an off-campus resources list that currently returns "The file you're looking for is no longer here" on CSUF's own site.
