The casseroles stop around week three. The grief doesn't. You're allowed to still be in it long after everyone else changed the subject.

Grief is not a disorder and doesn't need fixing on a schedule. But there are versions of it worth bringing to someone — when it's been many months and daily life still won't restart, when the death was sudden or violent, when you can't stop replaying it, or when "I'm fine" is a full-time performance. Three pieces.

The tool

The free layer first, because it's genuinely good: hospice bereavement programs must offer grief support to families for a year after a death — and most extend it to anyone in the community, no hospice connection required, free or near-free.¹ Call any hospice near you and ask for "community bereavement services." Groups and individual sessions both exist. If the death was a child or a pregnancy, ask specifically — dedicated programs exist and are worth the drive.

The inventory

If the loss is tangled with other weight (a complicated relationship with the person, trauma from how it happened), individual therapy reaches places groups can't. See our therapist directory’s current status →

The question people carry in quietly

Q: It's been over a year and I'm not "moving on." Is something wrong with me? A: There's no deadline, and most long grief is still just grief. When it stays this consuming — you can't function, the yearning won't loosen at all — clinicians call it prolonged grief, and specific therapy for it works well. The point of the label isn't that you're broken; it's that help exists that's built exactly for this. How to find someone →
