A layoff is a thing that happened to you, not a verdict about you. The economy is not a character witness.
Job loss hits identity, structure, and money in the same week — and it also starts a 60-day insurance clock most people discover too late. Two tracks here: keep yourself covered, and keep yourself well.
The insurance clock (60 days, three doors)
Door 1 — COBRA: keep your exact employer plan by paying the full premium yourself. Same therapist, same deductible progress, brutal price (often $600–800/month for one adult). Cal-COBRA extends similar rights to small-employer plans.¹ Door 2 — Covered California: job loss is a qualifying event, so you get a 60-day special enrollment window — and with subsidies now based on your reduced income, a silver plan frequently costs a fraction of COBRA.² Door 3 — Medi-Cal: eligibility runs on current monthly income, not last year's salary — a $0-income month can qualify you immediately, therapy included (the route →). The common wisdom: check doors 2 and 3 before paying for door 1; COBRA's main win is mid-treatment continuity with a therapist who only takes your old plan.
Already seeing someone? Say it plainly: "I lost my job and my coverage is changing — can we talk about a bridge rate?" Many therapists carry sliding-scale slots → for exactly this. Severance meetings also frequently include a few months of EAP access → — free sessions, use them.
The head part
The post-layoff spiral has a shape: shame that resists applying, sleep that slides, days without structure, and — especially for men — irritability that's actually depression →. Job loss reliably elevates depression risk,³ and treating it isn't an indulgence; interviewing while depressed is doing the hardest task in professional life with a hand tied. The unemployment math on therapy → starts at $0.
The question people carry in quietly
Q: Can I afford therapy with no job? A: Usually yes — a $0-income month typically qualifies you for Medi-Cal (therapy at $0), Covered California subsidies scale to your reduced income within a 60-day enrollment window after job loss, sliding-scale therapists start around $50, and severance packages often include free EAP sessions.
