The county runs a navigation line that also takes online chat. The Medi-Cal plan runs a behavioral health line that answers at three in the morning. Neither of them sells a testing battery, which is more than can be said for the first three results in a search.
The useful distinction is this: an ADHD diagnostic evaluation, a full psychological testing battery, and medication follow-up are three different services, and most adults should begin by asking for the first.¹ Full testing earns its cost when a clinician has to separate ADHD from a learning disorder, cognitive change or another complicated picture. Medication care needs a clinician who can prescribe and keep following you.

If you have CalOptima Health Medi-Cal
CalOptima's behavioral health line is 1-855-877-3885, TTY 711, "24 hours a day, 7 days a week," and the plan adds: "We have staff who speak your language."² The same page lists "Mental Health Evaluations and Assessments" among the services it provides — an evaluation "with one of our behavioral health providers" — alongside counselling, medication management and psychiatric consultation.² It also offers a telehealth booking route.²
So the sentence to use is specific: "I am a CalOptima member and I need an adult ADHD diagnostic evaluation — the mental health evaluation and assessment service on your page. Which network provider can complete it, and what is the soonest appointment?"
Settle one more thing on the same call: whether the clinician who evaluates can also prescribe, or whether medication goes through a separate psychiatric consultation. That decides whether you are booking one appointment or two.
If you are unsure where to start, or have no insurance
The county's OC Links line is (855) 625-4657, "24 hours a day, 7 days a week," described by the Health Care Agency as "a free and confidential telephone and online chat service that connects Orange County residents to mental health and substance use services," offering "information, prevention resources, treatment options, direct referrals to behavioral health programs or urgent mental health support."³
The chat option matters for people who cannot make a phone call at work. Whichever route you use, ask plainly: "I need an adult ADHD diagnostic evaluation. Which service handles that assessment for someone in my situation, and who is accepting referrals?" A navigation line is a door, not a promise of a county ADHD clinic; if it routes you to a plan, note the date, the name and the reason.
If you have commercial insurance
Call the behavioral-health number on the card and ask for "an in-network adult ADHD diagnostic evaluation — not automatically a full testing battery." Then ask who can complete the diagnosis, whether prior authorization is required, what your cost is for the evaluation and the follow-up, and whether the plan will arrange an out-of-network appointment at in-network cost if nobody in network can see you.
California's timely-access standard is generally 10 business days for a non-urgent appointment with a non-physician mental-health provider, subject to clinical exceptions and plan type. An online evaluation is not valid merely because it is convenient, and not invalid merely because it is online. Confirm the individual clinician's California licence, what happens beyond a checklist, what written document you receive, who provides follow-up, and the total first-90-day price.
Medication makes the arrangement more fragile.
