The useful distinction is this: an ADHD diagnostic evaluation, a full psychological testing battery, and medication follow-up are three different services, and most adults should begin by asking for the first.¹ Full testing earns its cost when a clinician has to separate ADHD from a learning disorder, cognitive change or another complicated picture. Sacramento County runs Behavioral Health Services — Screening and Coordination, reachable at (916) 875-1055 or toll-free (888) 881-4881, California Relay 711. The county describes it as "Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year", providing "screening for mental health and substance use services", "referrals to outpatient, residential, and recovery services", and "care coordination and linkage to providers."²
Three things follow. There is no wrong hour to call. Screening is the service on offer, so a call is not a commitment to anything. And "linkage to providers" is the phrase to repeat back: "I need an adult ADHD diagnostic evaluation. Which provider can complete that assessment, and can you link me to one?"
A screening line is a door, not a promise of a county ADHD clinic. If it sends you to your health plan instead, write down the date, the name and the reason — that record is what makes the next call shorter.
If you have commercial insurance or Medi-Cal through a health plan
Sacramento is a multi-plan county, so the number that matters is the behavioral-health number on your own card rather than any single plan's.
